The Joys and Obstacles of Being a Writer
by Briana Pacheco

Writing a book is hard. Any writer can tell you this. But it’s also beautiful. Magical. Inspiring. There’s something about writing words and creating a story, making people feel something, that brings a smile to my face every day. Readers push me to go further so I don’t stop. I don’t want to.

You will meet some awesome people once you step into the world of being a writer/author. I admit it’s terrifying, taking that leap but it’s so worth it. Becoming a writer has been one of the best decisions of my life. And I get to do it in pajamas with coffee beside me and Netflix playing in the background. Uh, yeah, I’d take that any day! You also have this amazing support group if you ever need help on something. These people have been or are feeling the same way you are. They are truly the best gift any beginner/expert in writing can have. Don’t be shy and get out there! You won’t regret it.

Every writer should know one thing before and after you open up a blank document; you need to have thick skin. There will be people that will not enjoy your book and they’ll possibly tell you by leaving review or posting something up on social media. You can not let it drag you down! There are how many people in this world and you’re going to let a few break you down? No. That’s not acceptable. You need to believe in yourself and do what you love. If you don’t believe in the power of your own words, how will you convince others to do the same?

Here’s a secret, I am my own worst critic. I think a lot of people can relate to that statement. I’m twenty years old, have published four books and I still get sick whenever someone tells me they’re reading my books because I think about all the negative things someone will say. I’m at a stage where criticism means everything but I have to ignore it. Or use it to my advantage. I believe in myself but there are moments where the doubt will start to takeover. You have to remind yourself that YOU are writing, YOU are doing what you love, and YOU are amazing. Like I said earlier, writing is hard. Not everyone can do it. So if you are, you are freaking fantastic and should never stop.

If you’re stuck on whether or not to go ahead and write a story, even a short one, let me say that you better get started! Stop reading this and go write. One sentence is all it takes to open up a magical world.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on being a writer, Briana!

  2. I had someone the other day tell me they were going to read one of my books next. The urge to hid was strong. LOL I think it will always be scary. Not sure it's a bad thing.

  4. I can definitely believe that being a writer can be very scary -- especially once your publish your work for the world to see and criticize.
